Senator Cotton and Mr David Fairbairn M.P. today issued a joint statement

which laid the. blame squarely at the feet of the Labor Government for

Twin Disc (Pacific) Pty Ltd"having to"cease its manufacturing operations.

Mr Fairbairn is the local member for the Albury area . and Senator Cotton

is the Liberal Party Spokesman for Manufacturing Industry.

The Joint statement claimed Twin Disc's closing of its manufacturing . '

operation was indicative of the beginning of a decline in country

manufacturing. Their concern at the-loss of jobs by a third of the

workers at Twin Disc was deepened in· the light of the apparent uneconomic

outlook for the whole country.manufacturing sector.

The Statement pointed out that this uneconomic outlook for country

manufacture placed in doubt the Labor Government's growth centre scheme

at Albury-Wodonga.

The statement also said that one of the major· causes for the instability

of country manufacture was the Labor Government's across the board

25$ Tariff cut earlier this year. Particularly when electors remember

it was only last year the present Government, when in Opposition,

proposed selective charges should accompany any tariff adjustment.

The joint statement concluded that undoubtedly the Government's two

revaluations of the . Australian dollar had also added to the

company's difficulties.
