The Labor Government is to be condemned for its negligent attitude to the future of Lake Pedder, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Lynch, said in Canberra today.

He said the Government’s absolute lack of concern for Lake Pedder was reflected in the totally inadequate answer given in the House of Representatives at Question Time today by the Minister for the Environment and Conservation, Dr Cass,

"It is almost inconceivable that Dr Cass could say in answer to my question that he has ’no idea’ whether or not the lake can be saved," Mr Lynch said.

' "This statement comes almost six months to the day since the Labor Government was voted into office — in part because of its promises to conservationists that it would take firm action to protect the environment.

"It must be obvious to the conservationists now that they have been deceived, particularly on the Lake Pedder issue."

Mr Lynch said that in the lead-up.to the election, the Australian people were deliberately and cynically led to believe that the lake would be saved from flooding by a Labor Government.

"But the Government has remained as immovable as Ayers Rock. Nothing has been done to save the lake. The ALP pre election statements have been revealed as an empty publicity . exercise.”

The Deputy Opposition Leader said Dr Cass could not hide behind the study xgroup set up to inquire into the circumstances leading to the flooding of Lake Pedder. .

He added: "Advertisements inserted by his own Department stated that the group’s main aim would be 1 the drawing up of guidelines for future environmental investigations of similar projects by the Australian Government1.

"It was not set up to try to save the lake."
