SNKDDBN ADVOCATES RATIONALITY IN HEALTH CAKE

The whole Issue of the health care of Australia is being

increasingly obscured. On the other hand the medical profession

intends to raise their fees in a manner which is unacceptable to

the community. On the other hand the Minister for Social

Security, Mr. .'Hayden, cries out in a manner equally unacceptable —

threats of price control of fees in an autocratic way.

It really is tline that some rationality was brought back

into this whole area. The cause for the greatest concern is the

s Health Insurance Planning Committee Report - which the

Government without consultation with the patient, tlio profession

or the taxpayer is determined to enforce.

The controversy has pentred on the question of doctors fees

and is excluding fundamental points about the proposed Health

Scheme. The Government's concern should be for the real cost

of medical care which the scheme advocated in the report and

such vital matters of public urgency as -

(a) the need to provide a 24-hour community health service seven

days a week available to all people.

(b) the importance of the consumer - that is, the patient's

rights being protected.

(c) the need to consider the views of all health care professionals -

i.e, nurses and medical support groups, as well as the

medical profession.

(d) the'real cost.
