TELEGRAM FROM THE RT. HON. B. M. SNEDDEN, Q.C., M.P.

TO CAPT. RITCHIE, GENERAL MANAGER. QANTAS

8 "March, 1973.-

A roneod circular purporting to be signed by

Mr. D. R. Burton, Federal Secretary of the Australasian

Transport Officers Federation and sent to all Qantas

members, has been brought to my attention today.

The circular states that the Federation has agreed

with Qantas Airways to have their membership subscription

deducted through the payroll. It also says that members

are advised that four weeks leave for Qantas employees

has been approved in principle and that the additional

week's leave will apply to only those who are financial

members of the appropriate organisation covering their

occupation.

This apparent arrangement seems to be in direct

conflict with what the Labor Government, as a result

of our strong opposition, is now proposing for the

Commonwealth Public Service and amounts to compulsory

union service.

If these factors are correct, I ask you

to reconsider the position and ensure that new benefits

apply to all employees.
