Twenty five years ago today, the last Australian Labor Party Government was defeated at the polls when a Liberal/Country Party Government headed by Sir Robert Menzies was elected, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate,

Senator R.G. Withetrs, said today. .

"Now, after .Qnly two years of Labor rule it seems like 25 years since the Labor Party gained office," he said.

"The ALP's slogan "It's Time" should more appropriately be "Doing Time".

"It is now only a matter of time before the success of the coalition parties on 10th December, 1949, is repeated."

Senator Withers said that the Government led by Sir Robert Menzies had set Australia on a healthy and prosperous road. 1

Australia had travelled along that road steadily until December, 1972. .

"Now, during two long years under a Labor Government the Australian economy is in ruin, unemployment is rocketing, the quality of life is deteriorating and the Prime Minister has the audacity to tell us we have never had it so good," he said.

"While the Prime Minister wings his way towards a White Christmas in Europe many Australians are looking forward to the blackest Christmas they have ever known.

"Thousands of school leavers, instead of looking forward to the New Year as a time when they will be launched in their chosen career, are fearful that in the New Year they will not be able to get a job in any sphere, let along a

particular one.

"We celebrate the silver anniversary of the election of the Liberal/Country Party Government in 1949, looking forward to the day we start our next quarter of a century in Government". . ■ :
