Compensation for Rural Leases in ACT

Download PDFDownload PDF

STATEMENT BY HON. A.A. STREET, M.P., SHADOW MINISTER FOR THE A.C.T.

The Government must make a decision on whether

it is going to pay interest on outstanding

compensation payments to rural lessees in the

A.C.T.

Many people have had their leases compulsorily

acquired, some over two years ago, but have not

received any interest payments.

Some lessees are now being forced to run their

stock on smaller and smaller areas and water

supplies are becoming inadequate.

I have had a Parliamentary Question on Notice

asking when the Treasurer and the Attorney-General

are going to give a decision on this issue, but

Parliament has now risen without any reply.

For the sake of the people concerned, I urge the

Government to clarify the situation as soon as

possible. There has been more than enough time to

resolve this quite simple problem.
