FROM THE HON. ANDREW PEACOCK, -MP. , ■

SHADOW MINISTER FOR FOREIGN'" AFFAIRS & EXTERNAL TERRITORIES

WORLD FOOD CONFERENCE

The World. Food Conference and the five-point program put. forward by Dr„ Kissinger focuses on the fundamental problem of international co-operation today : the food/population conundrum.

As a resource-rich nation, Australia obviously has an important role to play in any action to overcome this critical problem. As a major food producer and exporter, we have a responsibility that we must accept.

The very real problem of rapidly increasing world population and scarce food resources is reaching crisis proportions. In India and in North Africa today there are famines on a massive scale... Our obligation to our fellow human beings is clear. ■ · .

It is past the time when the developed nations should combine in . an internationally co-ordinated program to meet this most pressing, need. It is a matter that can no longer be put off.

There must be international action and Australia must take an active and constructive part in formulating an international strategy " to alleviate starvation and malnutrition, _

There is a need for a more comprehensive examination of international trade, aid and resources policies to- seek a more equitable share for all in the world's wealth. ·

The disastrous impact of the oil embargo on many developing nations demonstrated the need for a' greater consciousness of the impact, of such actions on others. It demonstrated the need for a greater sense of international morality in such matters. - '

All resource-rich countries should support the principles of the Kissinger plan and join in the effort to establish new forms of international co-operation for the benefit of all people.

This will provide an opportunity for Labor to indicate its sincerity in international affairs. .
