JOINT NEWS RELEASE BY HON. A.A. STREET, SHADOW MINISTER FOR A.C.T. AND HON. J.E. McLEAY, SHADOW MINISTER FOR HOUSING

The Government have got their building priorities in Canberra

back to front. They have started a three year $80M. program

to provide office block accommodation for 12,000 public

servants, but this year's housing target of 1400 units is

in fact a reduction on last year's target of 1550 units.

In fact only 823 units were completed last year, and about

1000 will be started this year. Of the housing units which

will become available during 1974-75, only about two-thirds

will be detached housing. '

Unless the Government changes its priorities and diverts

into housing some of the money ear-marked for office blocks

which they may not be able to fill, the housing shortage

will get worse and waiting lists will get longer.
