NEWS RELEASE BY HON. ANDREW PEACOCK M.P.

SHADOW MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Does Labor Support Non-Alignment For Australia?

Mr Whitlam today failed to reject non-alignment as a foreign

policy option for Australia.

He was asked in the House of Representatives whether he would

do so-as he apparently did on 24 May 1973. Dr Cairns, as

President of the Committee for Disarmament and Co-operation,

specifically supports non-alignment as the basis for

Australia’s foreign policy. I asked the Prime Minister to

state unequivocally that this is not the Labor Party’s policy.

He refused to do so.

This is another example. Of the chaos into which the Labor

Party's foreign policy has collapsed. It is a series of failures

and contradictions as with their recent decision on the Baltic

States. \ '

Again, the Prime Minister has failed to stand up to his Deputy.

The Opposition regards non-alignment as unrealistic and

unacceptable for Australia. We accept the right of those who

- espouse non-alignment to do so. We appreciate their reasons

for the stand they take. But it is not an option for Australia.

The Opposition rejects non-alignment.

The Opposition calls on the Prime'Minister to do likewise.
