MEDIA RELEASE

STATEMENT FROM THE HON. J.E. MCLEAY, MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR HOUSING AND CONSTRUCTION

The announcement today by the Minister for Housing that the .Government has decided on a plan to provide more than $25 million for housing pensioners is another example of the Minister's political grandstanding which is designed to

obscure the Government's total lack of initiative in its housing policies,.

He has been unable to find any good news to announce for months,,... This dressed-up lead about housing pensioners is an unconscious acknowledgment Of .the efficacy of a

Liberal/Country Party:measure introduced in 1959. .

It is an equally unconscious acknowledgment that the economic mismanagement of the Government is hitting hardest those in the community least able to protect themselves.

The extension of this housing agreement will, provide $8 million a year, which is an increase of 60% since it was introduced in 1969.

Building costs have risen 58.4% and, according to the latest C.P',1. statistics, these costs are currently escalating at 7.7% a quarter, excluding interest and land costs. ·

This is an annual rise of more than 30%.

Approvals for dwellings constructed with this money have fallen from the figure 1315 in 1971/72 to 486 in 1972/73 and it .is' obvious that less and less dwellings will be erected in the future. .

The Government persists in using statistics which are months old and consistently ignores the advice of industry leaders.

Government policies are ruining the building industry ensuring that fewer Australians ■ of all ages are being housed each year.

It's claims to support the philosophy of home ownership and adequate housing for all are totally false.
