STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF: THE OPPOSITION .

■ « " λ IN THE SENATE, SENATOR R.G. WITHERS .

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate,

Senator R.G. Withers, today accused the Minister

for Services and Property of "deluded imaginings"

in his predictions of a split in the Opposition Parties

early next year.

"The Minister is making far too many assumptions

concerning electoral redistributions," Senator Withers

said.

"According to Mr. Daly it will be these electoral

redistributions which will cause his predicted 1 split1

between the Opposition Parties.

"His first assumption is that, the Senate will :

sanction an electoral redistribution'whatever its ,

effect".

"I wish to assure Mr. Daly that the Senate will

certainly not be acting as a rubber stamp for any of his

legislation which has passed the House of Representatives.

"As in the last Parliament we will scrutinize

all legislation which comes before us. .

"If we have no basic policy disagreement with

legislation which comes before the Senate we will

support that legislation. ; .

"If we are opposed to a Bill we will state so

quite clearly and do our best to defeat that legislation.

' "It is quite ridiculous to think of carrying

out an electoral redistribution before the 1975

census is taken because that census will determine - · .

the number of seats to be allocated to each State,"

he said.

"To order an unnecessary redistribution 12

months before that census is taken would not only be

sheer folly, but would be absolute proof that the

A.L.P. is not interested in electoral justice, but

merely in manipulating the electorate for its own

advantage". . . ,
