THE .LIBERAL PARTY OF AUSTRALIA FEDERAL SECRETARIAT "

MEDIA RELEASE

•FROM MR. PHILLIP LYNCH, ' ‘ l

. DEPUTY LEADER. OF THE OPPOSITION . ■ .

Prime Minister Whitlam has a' writ of 'habeas caucus1 ' hanging over his ■ head,· the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Phillip Lynch, said in Sydney today. '

"Mr. Whitlam's attempt to white-ant.his Treasurer is meeting with · increasing caucus opposition. ‘ ' ·

"It is high time the Prime Minister stopped knifing Mr. Crean from behind and made his position clear.

"It. is a tragedy that a man of Mr. Crean's personal integrity has been placed in such an invidious position by his own Leader," Mr. Lynch'said.

"There is no precedent in Australian political_history for a Prime Minister to refuse to publicly endorse the competency of his own. . Treasurer. {

"Mr. Whitlam has clearly contrived to make Mr. Crean the scapegoat for the current1 economic situation.

■ "It is a matter of concern that Australia has a Prime Minister who " does not have the guts to take action to re-shape his ministry.

"It is-clearly damaging to public confidence' when Mr., Whitlam is seen to be undermining his senior ministers in order to achieve a Cabinet, reshuffle. .

"Mr. Whitlam1s tactics make it almost impossible for the accepted system of Cab.inetr responsibility to operate . * * * * * *
