Leader of the Opposition.

Press Statement No.

Statement by the Hon. E.G. Whitlam, QC, MP

All of a sudden,'with talk of a premature election in the

air, Mr Fraser is concerned about public ignorance of

Government programs to assist migrants and the unemployed.

First we learnt of Cabinet1 s decision to spend $100,000.

on advertisements in the ethnic press between now and December

Now there are reports that they plan to spend another

$1 million to tell the unemployed of the Government's

belated and inadequate assistance schemes.

The advertising campaign won't tell the ethnic population

of the migrant programs the Government has slashed in the ■ /·.■ · ·

past two years. It won't tell the unemployed how they

came to lose their jobs, or in the case of young unemployed

why there are no jobs available. This is a blatant use

of taxpayers' money for party propaganda^. Taxpayers

will see through it as they have already seen through

Mr Fraser's clumsy attempts to engineer phoney election
