Leader of the Opposition

I PRESS STATEMENT NO:

T H E B U D G E T

It is impossible to recall a budget which hides so much.

Nobody listening to the budgetVwould realise that it will increase

unemployment, that tax indexation will be halved, that inflation will continue at least at current levels, that average weekly

earnings will fall. Mr. Lynch hid the very savage cut-backs being

made in almost all areas by the simple expedient of not mentioning

them.

When people learn what the budget really contains they will be very

disappointed indeed. ' .

The real truth is contained in the statements he tabled. There he says that there will be little or no change in unemployment over

this financial year. He also points out that inflation over this .

year will be over ten percent. And he points out that average

weekly earnings will come down.

When the truth emerges, this is certainly not a budget on which the

Government could win an election. ยท .
