Press Statement No

Archbishop Makarios

Statement by the Hon. E. G. Whitlam, Q.C. M.P.

President Makarios was admired as a religious and political leader in a part of the tvorld with a history

of community tension over many centuries. His remarkable

gifts as a statesman and peacemaker, and the deep spiritual

force that he brought to the struggle for Cyprian independence

were respected throughout the world. .

He was the senior Commonwealth Head of Government. Not only Cypriots, but all Greeks in particular, and indeed all

Australians, will regret that he will be unable to make the

visit to Australia which I invited him to make in Jamaica in 1975, and which was the end of this year.

On behalf of the Australian Labor Party I extend my deepest

sympathy to the Government and people of Cyprus in the loss of their renowned and valiant, leader.
