VOTES AT 18 - THE HIGH COURT DECISION

Statement by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr E.G. Vhitlam, Q.C., M.P.

"73

The decision of the High Court puts the onus on the

Federal Parliament to legislate for votes at 18, The Court

has merely found that the.Constitution does not provide for

votes at 18 under the laws of South Australia, Western

Australia and Tasmania. These are the States where 1 8-year

olds have votes in State elections. There is still time

for the McMahon Government to legislate for votes at 18 for

the next election. A Labor Government certainly will.
