Leader of the Opposition i

Australians should be outraged by Mr Fraser's failure to explain or justify the seizure of diaries kept during the election campaign by police officers assigned for my protection.

This action is reminiscent of police state ' ~~ methods and carries with it the most disturbing implications for civil liberties.

Police officers are assigned to political leaders as body guards not as spies. There has never been any secret about my movements as Prime Minister or Opposition Leader in Australia or overseas. I move freely in public.

I do not travel incognito.

. One can imagine the outcry if after the May 1974 election I had called for the diaries of the police who protected Mr Snedden during the campaign. Mr Fraser must state who authorised the seizure of the diaries

of the police who protected me and how soon I may expect to receive photostats or transcripts of them.
