A continuation of the Northern Territory's present

building boom is forecast in the Northern Territory Report for

1969-70 released today by the Minister for the Interior, Mr '

Peter Nixon. ' * ... ' · . * ·

The report says building approvals indicate factory,

hotel-motel and private flats construction wall continue at a

high level during 1970-71 while institutional building will be

boosted by a number of hostel projects and major contracts are

expected to be let for Government offices in Darwin.

It also mentions a number of contracts let.during

1969-70 which will continue into the current financial year

ranging from new schools and housing to ABC television studios

in Darwin and a $2.7 million Government hostel complex at Alice

Springs. .

The report says building approvals for 1969-70 reached

$69.4 million, an increase of over $40 million or 139$ on the

previous .12 months.

A big factor in the increase was the beginning of .

development of the new town of Nhulunbuy at Gove. .

This lifted the value of new building approvals, for the

month of December, 1969, to $28.8 million. This compared with the

normal $2 million to $4 million for a single .month and was

greater than the total of approvals for the whole of the previous

year when approvals set a record.

. But even with NhulunBuy, the report says, the Building

Boom elsewhere in the Territory showed little sign of slackening.

Approvals excluding HhulunBuy were $44.3 million or some 53f°

higher than in 1968-69.
