APPOINTMENT TO SUPREME COURT OF PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA

(Statement by the Minister for External Territories, the Hon. C. E. Barnes, M.P.)

The Minister for External Territories, Mr Barnes, today announced that Mr Edmund Peter Tom Paine, E.D., a Sydney barrister, had been appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Papua and New Guinea.

Mr Barnes said that the appointment of. Mr Paine gave the Territory its full complement of six judges following the death of the former Chief Justice, Sir Alan Mann M.B.E., Q.C.

Mr Paine, a bachelor, was educated at Sydney Grammar School' and the University of Sydney where he obtained his LL.B. He was admitted to the Bar in October 1949.

Mr Barnes said that Mr Paine served with an anti­ craft unit in the Northern Territory 1943-44 and in the South Pacific and Japan 1945-46. At present Mr Paine holds the rank of Colonel in the C.M.P. and has served for many years as a Judge Advocate.

Mr Paine also served as a junior counsel■in both Royal Commissions into the "Voyager" disaster.

Mr Barnes said that Mr Paine1s appointment would take effect from 4th September, 1970.
