IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Royal .Australian Navy has placed an order for the

construction of a new hydrographic survey.ship, the Minister

for the Navy (Mr. Killen) announced today.

Mr. Killen said the new ship, to be built at

Williamstown Dockyard would enable the Navy to step up its

task of charting and surveying the .Commonwealth's shipping

routes to existing and likely ports. ·

It would replace HMAS FALUMA, and would complement

the work"of the modern hydrographic survey ship HMAS MORESBY

commissioned in 1964.

. The ship would be 160 ft. long, with a beam of

33 ft. and a displacement'of about 720 tons. She would

have diesel engines. „ . '

Mr, Killen said the planned complement was 37. '
