B IG MARITIME EXERCISE OFF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Australian, British and New Zealand ships and

aircraft will take part in a major maritime exercise off

Western Australia later this year, the Minister for the

Navy, Mr. D.J.· Killen, sa.id today.

' Mr. Killen, speolcing at a passing out parade at ·

the R A N 1s junior recruit training establishment, HMAS LEEUWIN,

at Fremantle, said the exercise would be held in November.

The exercise is nicknamed Swan Lake. It will be

under the operational command of the Flag Officer.Commanding

the Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral H.D. Stevenson, who will

be embarked in the RAN flagship, the aircraft carrier HMAS

MELBOURNE.

Units of the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Navy,

Royal New Zealand Navy, Royal Australian Air Force and the

Royal New Zealand Air Force will take p art.

Ten Australian ships, including HMAS MELBOURNE', will

be deployed. Other ships will be destroyers, support ships,

submarines and minesweepers.

Phases of the exercise will involve the initial

deployment of maritime forces from the east coast of Australia

to the Indian Ocean. Then will follow mine countermeasure,

submarine, . weapon training and aircraft exercises.

Mr, Killen said Swan Lake wpuld be the third major

maritime exercise in which Australia, Britain and New Zealand

ho„d taken part this year. ·

Ships of the three Navies joined other allied

forces in the annual.SEATO exercise which was completed in

April and Australian, British and New Zealand ships and

aircraft would begin the major maritime phase of the five-

power exercise Berso„tu Padu in Malaysia later this week.

Mr. Killen said several ship visits to Australian

capital cities and to West Australian ports were planned

to take place after exercise Swan Lake. . .
