THE MINISTER FOR THE

CAPITAL TERRITORY

Retailers could benefit from legislative proposals designed to allow

some extension of commercial selling space on to public places.

The move could assist such commercial ventures as outdoor cafes and

allow retailers to have sales displays and selling areas outside their

premises. ■ ■

The Minister for the Capital Territory, Mr Tony Staley, said he saw

the move as an important relaxation in terms of the use of open spaces

and that he thought it would do much to add life, colour and perhaps even

a little bit of bustle to the Canberra scene.

The proposals are contained in the Roads and Public Places (Amendment).

Bill which the Minister has referred to the ACT Legislative Assembly.

If agreed to, they would establish the conditions for the use of public

places for commercial purposes.

The assembly's advice is also being sought on systems of charging for

the space used. .
