STATEMENT FOR PRESS

THE MINISTER FOR THE

CAPITAL TERRITORY

The Minister for the Capital Territory, Mr Tony Staley, said

today that amendments to the ACT Consumer Affairs Ordinance 1973 would

become law .tomorrow. . ”

Mr Staley said the new Ordinance would give the Director of

Consumer Affairs power to demand information from corporations and

individuals and allow him to institute or defend court proceedings on

behalf of consumers.

' It would also give the Consumer Affairs Bureau power to deal

with complaints about real estate.

Mr Staley said the amendments would increase significantly the

powers of the ACT Consumer Affairs Bureau which would be able to deal more

effectively with consumers' complaints.
