PRESS STATEMENT by the Federal Minister for Health

AUSTRALASIAN MEDICAL PUBLISHING COMPANY TO

TAKE OVER PRODUCTION OF "AUSTRALIAN PRESCRIBER"

The Federal Minister for Health, Mr Jim Carlton and the Chairman of the Australasian Medical Publishing Company, Dr Lindsay Thompson, announced today in a joint statement that the publishing company will take over production of the

quarterly journal Australian Prescriber.

The journal, which deals with drugs and drug prescribing, was conceived by the Commonwealth Department of Health and has been produced by Departmental staff under the guidance of an independent Editorial Board since 1975.

"My predecessor, Mr Michael MacKellar, decided last year that a publication of this nature need not be funded by the taxpayer", Mr Carlton said. "Since taking up the Health portfolio I have reviewed this decision, and I have concluded that subscribers will undoubtedly be prepared to pay for such a journal and

regard it as a professional expense".

Mr Carlton said he had selected Australasian Medical Publishing Company, publishers of the Medical Journal of Australia, after evaluating proposals from a number of publishers who sought to take over production.

"I am confident", he said "that the journal will continue to be produced in a manner that will preserve its independence and high standards".

The Australasian Medical Publishing Company, Dr Thompson said, would initially distribute Australian Prescriber as a supplement to the Medical Journal of Australia, and had agreed that it would be available for public subscription. Efforts would be made by the company for the inclusion of Australian

Prescriber as a supplement to the journal of other professional bodies.

The journal, which had been distributed free by the Health Department to some 45,000 readers including doctors, pharmacists, dentists and a wide cross-section of other health professions, has won wide acceptance both in Australia and overseas.
