FRAUD AND OVERSERVICING

THE MINISTER FOR HEALTH, THE HON M.J.R. MACKELLAR, MP

TODAY WELCOMED THE AGREEMENT WHICH HAD BEEN REACHED

AT THE AUSTRALIAN HEALTH' MINISTERS' CONFERENCE, AT ITS

MEETING IN ADELAIDE ON.COOPERATION BETWEEN THE

COMMONWEALTH AND STATES ON'STEPS'TO COMBAT FRAUD AND

OVERSERVICING BY DOCTORS. .

A CONSTRUCTIVE AND COOPERATIVE APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM,

INVOLVING THE COMMONWEALTH AND STATES AS WELL AS THE MEDICAL PROFESSION ITSELF, WAS ESSENTIAL, MR MACKELLAR

SAID, IF EFFECTIVE ACTION WAS TO BE TAKEN TO COMBAT THE PROBLEM. ,

MR MACKELLAR OBSERVED THAT FRAUD AND OVERSERVICING BY

DOCTORS· WAS COSTING THE COMMUNITY IN EXCESS OF $100 MILLION A YEAR-, THAT THE COMMONWEALTH WAS COMMITTED TO ACT RESOLUTELY

TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM AND THAT THE MEDICAL PROFESSION

HAD ALREADY SHOWN A WILLINGNESS TO COOPERATE. HE EMPHASISED THAT THE PROBLEM RELATED TO THE ACTIONS OF ONLY A SMALL *>

MINORITY OF DOCTORS.

MR MACKELLAR SAID THAT THE HEALTH. MINISTERS HAD AGREED THAT

STATE DEPARTMENTS AND REGISTRATION BOARDS SHOULD BE INFORMED

OF THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF MEDICAL BENEFITS FRAUD AND

OVERSERVICING. THE COMMONWEALTH AND STATE MINISTERS M.SO

AGREED THAT DISCUSSIONS TAKE PLACE AT OFFICER LEVEL BETWEEN

THE COMMONWEALTH AND THE STATES ON WAYS IN WHICH THERE CAN BE

MUTUAL ASSISTANCE IN COMBATING FRAUD AND OVERSERVICING.

THE COMMONWEALTH GOVERNMENT EXPECTS TO INTRODUCE AMENDMENTS

TO THE HEALTH INSURANCE ACT IN THE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT TODAY

WHICH WILL INCLUDE.DISQUALIFICATION,. FOR MEDICAL BENEFITS

PURPOSES, OF DOCTORS WHO HAVE COMMITTED MEDICAL BENEFITS FRAUDS

MR MACKELLAR WELCOMED THE COOPERATIVE APPROACH AGREED TO BY

THE STATES AND STATED THAT THE GOVERNMENT'S ABILITY TO COMBAT

THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN GREATLY ENHANCED. .
