IMPORTATION OF HORSES BY AIR

Horses may now be air freighted to Australia from the . .

United Kingdom and Ireland provided the aircraft uses a prescribed

route. Previously horses from these countries could only be

imported by sea. ■

The Minister for Health, Senator Sir Kenneth Anderson,

said today that he had been advised that aircraft now in use

could fly a route which would avoid exposing the horses to the

risk of diseases not found in Australia.

. He said the use of air transport would facilitate the

movement of horses from the United Kingdom and Ireland, the

only countries apart from New Zealand from which Australia

imported horses. . .

Until now their movement by sea had been limited by the '

shipping space suitable for livestock and by a requirement that

they be shipped only via the Cape of Good Hope on a vessel which ·

did not.call at an African port. Horses could not be brought

into Australia via the Panama Canal because of the danger of

contracting Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis.

Sir Kenneth said the conditions to be observed for importation

by air were.-- ------------

. A fourteen day pre-embarkation quarantine period.

. The aircraft must refuel only at Vancouver and Fiji.

. The horses must not be taken from the aircraft at any stop.

. ,On arrival in Australia the horses must serve a 30 day

period in a quarantine station. .

v>ir Kenneth said that New Zealand, in conjunction with Australia, had recently approved the importation of horses by air

from the United Kingdom and Ireland. Many horses flown to New

Zealand had been allowed to enter Australia after a period of ·

quarantine. Direct· importation by air would remove this inconvenience.
