The Commonwealth Minister for Health, Senator Sir

Kenneth Anderson to-day replied to statements on the Pensioner

Medical Service by a spokesman for the General Practitioners

Society. ' ' . ' . ·

Sir Kenneth said the Government had had an arrangement

with the Federal Council of the Australian Medical Associa.tion

regarding the Pensioner Medical Service since 1951 . Under the

National Health Act the A.M.A. was the body with which the

Government must negotiate in relation to t he'arrangement0

From 1 July 1971 the Government increased the fees

payable to general practitioners for services under the.Pensioner

Medical Service from $1,85 to $2.50 for surgery consultations

(an increase of 3 5 ?°) and from $2.35 to $3.60 for home visits (an

increase of 5 3 ?°). This involved an increase in the payments to

doctors for this work of over S8m per annum. The fees payable

from 1 July 1971 were those sought by the A.M.A. Under the

arrangements existing between the A.M.A. and the Government these

fees are to apply for the two year period ending on .30 June 1973. .
