NEW COMMUNITY HEALTH PROJECT IN VICTORIA

The Minister for Health, the Hon. Michael MacKellar, announced

today that a new community health centre is to he established at

Portland, a country town with a population of about 8500 located

300 kilometres west of Melbourne. -

The population of Portland is expected to expand rapidly

in the next five years with the development of the Alcoa

aluminium plant.

The health centre to be established at Portland will be

staffed by a community health nurse, a social worker and a

typist-clerk, and will provide community health and health-

related welfare services to Portland and district.

The centre, which will become operational once suitable

premises have been established on land donated by the Shire

of Portland, will meet the need for support services in the

area. : . .

The centre will be financed jointly by the Commonwealth

and "Victorian Governments under the Community Health Program.

The Commonwealth's share of the cost will be met from the

1980-81 block grant of $15.31 million to Victoria for general

community health services.
