COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAM GRANTS TO NATIONAL ORGANISATIONS

The Minister for Health, the Hon. Michael MacKellar,

announced today Commonwealth grants totalling $6 373 2Ό0 for

15 national organisations whose work has wide-ranging

community health relevance.

The grants, being made under the Community Health

Program, represent an increase of $450 000 over total funds

made available to these 15 organisations in 1979/80. .

" The grants were included in the allocation of

$66,525 million for the Community Health Program in the

1980/81 Commonwealth Budget.

Activities supported by the grants are of a wide-

ranging nature and include -. co-ordinating a program of vocational training

for family medical practice;

. co-ordinating a program aimed at reducing the

incidence and effects of alcoholism in industry;

. co-ordinating mental health mutual support and

counselling services for persons *at risk· or

in crisis situations (e.g., GROW, Life Line);

. health education programs sponsored by the

National Heart Foundation and Nursing Mothers*

Association; .

. promoting the welfare of children in hospitals;

. training of health personnel assisting blind

. promoting community health research in Australia;

. co-ordinating health student initiatives in various

community health fields;

. providing resource facilities and materials to

assist those concerned with combating problems
