FROM THE COMMONWEALTH MINISTER FOR HEALTH THE HON. M. J. R. MACKELLAR

COMMONWEALTH/STATE MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE ON

DRUG STRATEGY

The inaugural meeting of the Commonwealth/State Ministerial

Committee on Drug Strategy took place in Canberra today. A list

of participants is attached,

The Committee was established by decision of the Premiers' -Conference. It will enable co-ordination of the work now going

on within the Commonwealth State and Territory Governments and in

specialist Commonwealth/State Ministerial forums. This co-ordination

will ensure that all the recommendations of recent reports on drugs

are considered, that a consistent approach is sought among the

various forums, and that the momentum is maintained.

The Committee has a broad canvas to cover. Three Royal

Commissions and a Senate Standing Committee have reported on

drugs. There have been a number of other relevant reports.

The Committee has the task of co-ordinating the handling of all

the recommendations made in these reports on a co-operative basis.

The Committee is reviewing each of the recommendations and

consolidating, for each of the Commonwealth, State and Northern

Territory Governments, the progress made to date and the governmental

responsibilities. The Committee will be reporting to the June 1981

Premiers' Conference. .

It will meet again in Sydney on 28 May and will then

report to the June 1981 Premiers' Conference.

CANBERRA: 20 March 1981.
