FROM THE COMMONWEALTH MINISTER FOR HEALTH THE HON. M. J. R. MACKELLAR

FIRST CONSIGNMENT OF HORSES DIRECT FROM CANADA

The first consignment of horses direct from Canada arrived

in Australia by air at the weekend, the Minister for Health, the

Hon. M. J. R. MacKellar, announced today. '

The importation, of 52 horses, was made under new protocols

developed by the Department of Health following international

• negotiations and close consultation with quarantine authorities

in the Australian States and Territories, the Minister said.

Previously, all horses from Canada had to undergo a

two month period of quarantine" in the United Kingdom before

being transferred to Australia.

Under the new conditions horses which have been resident

in Canada for at least two months prior to export, including

30 days in a designated quarantine area, may be flown direct to Australia during the northern winter months when there is

an absence of insect vectors of some equine diseases which

occur in North America.

The first consignment of horses'direct from Canada was

accompanied by an Australian Veterinary Officer who inspected

quarantine arrangements in Canada prior to departure. The

horses will be held at quarantine stations in Melbourne and

Sydney for two weeks before being released to their owners.
