PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR HEALTH, THE HON. M. J. MAOKELLAR

ADDITIONAL INTERPRETCRS/TRANSLATORS IN HEALTH SERVICES

' The Minister for Health, the Hon. Michael MacKellar,approved

today the'Community Health Program funding of additional

interpreters/translators in health services for two States -

$370 000 for New South Wales and $150 000 for "Victoria.

The funding is part of the Commonwealth Government's commit­

ment of $2.4 million to the States and the Northern Territory,

over a period of three years, for a special program to help overcome

communication difficulties encountered by migrants and Aboriginals.

Mr MacKellar said that, by accepting the Commonwealth's offer

of 100 per cent funding until 50 June 1980, an additional 27

interpreters/translators and support staff would be employed by

State authorities in New South Wales and 16 in Victoria. Common­

wealth funding for the following two years would be at a 75 per

cent level.

Each health interpreter/translator would be part of the

health care team, and would possess a basic knowledge of health

matters, an ability to establish effective communications between

the client and health professionals and an understanding of the

client1s cultural background.
