PRESS RELEASE BY THE COMMONWEALTH MINISTER FOR HEALTH,

DR. A.J. FORBES

REPORT ON ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION

The Commonwealth Minister for Health, Dr. A.J. Forbes,

today released the report of the National Health and Medical

Research Council's Committee on the Rationalisation of

Facilities for Organ Transplantation and Renal Dialysis.

Dr. Forbes said the report had been approved by the

full National Health and Medical Research Council and had

been circulated to the State Ministers for Health.

The report was prepared by a committee of experts in

health administration, surgery, immunology, bacteriology and

nephrology under the Chairmanship of Professor J. Loewenthal,

Professor of Surgery at the University of Sydney. The

committee began its study of the rationalisation of the

facilities for organ transplants in April this year.

Dr. Forbes said the committee's report was concerned

mainly with the medical aspects of transplants. The moral,

ethical and legal aspects of organ transplantation were

still under consideration.
