PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR HEALTH, MR RALPH HUNT

COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAM.GRANTS

TO n a t i o n a l 'ORGANISATIONS

The Minister for Health, Mr Ralph Hunt, announced

today Commonwealth grants totalling $1 201 150 for 14

national organisations whose work has wide-ranging com­

munity health relevance. . .

The grants are being made under the Community Health

Program and- represent an increase of $82 900 over total

funds made available to these organisations in 1978-79.

- The grants were included in the allocation o f.,

$59.27 million for the Community Health Program in the

1979-80 Commonwealth Budget.

The wide-ranging nature of the activities supported

by the grants include:

. Co-ordinating -a program aimed at reducing the

■ incidence and effects of alcoholism in industry; ,

. Co-ordinating mental health mutual support and

counselling services for persons 'at risk' or in

crisis situations (e.g., GROW, Life Line);

. Health education programs sponsored by the National

Heart Foundation, St John Ambulance and Nursing

Mothers' Associations;

. Promoting the welfare of children in hospitals;

. Training of health personnel assisting blind

people;

. Promoting community health research in Australia;

* Co-ordinating health student initiatives in various

community health fields;

, . Providing resource facilities and materials to

assist those concerned with combating problems

associated with alcoholism, drug dependency and

mental illness.

In announcing the grants, Mr Hunt said the funds

allocated would enable the organisations concerned to

continue functioning during 1979-80.

National Lifeline Continued funding on basis of 60% of Association part-time Secretariat, located in Brisbane.

Continued funding of Association's promotional role for the welfare of children in hospital.

Australian National Association for Mental Health

Continued funding of Association's "catalyst" role in the mental health field.

Australian Medical Continued funding of "Student Initiatives Students' in Community Health" project. .

Secretarial assistance related to Society’s administrative and co­ ordinating role in promoting community health research in Australia.

Australian Council Assistance for the Council’s of Community activities in developing professional Nursing standards, co-ordination and liaison

in the community nursing and associated fields. '
