PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR HEALTH, MR RALPH HUNT

COMMONWEALTH FUNDS FOR LAUNCESTON

GENERAL HOSPITAL

The Minister for Health, Mr Ralph Hunt, said today

that the Commonwealth allocation of $5.5 million to

Tasmania for Launceston Hospital, announced in last

night1s Budget, was for the Stage I re-development of

the hospital.

'This is the fourth year in which the Commonwealth

has substantially assisted Tasmania with this important

project', Mr Hunt said.

The Commonwealth's contribution is made on a

dollar-for-dollar basis.

Mr Hunt said that in the three previous financial

years the Commonwealth's contributions had been:

1976- 77 $1,041 million

1977- 78 $3,350 million ■

1978- 79 $4,960 million

Mr Hunt said that Stage I of the new hospital, to

which the Commonwealth is contributing, wou}.d provide

diagnostic and out-patient services as well as 128 beds

to replace existing, sub-standard beds and facilities in

the old hospital.

'The first stage of the new hospital is programmed

for completion in 1980-81, and construction is currently

on schedule', Mr Hunt said.

The total estimated cost is $45 million.

'When completed,'the first stage of Launceston "

Hospital viill provide diagnostic, treatment and accommoda­

tion services of the highest standard', Mr Hunt said.
