NEW WOMEN'S REFUGES TO GET SUPPORT

Two new women's refuges in Western Australia are to

receive funds from the Commonwealth and State Governments.

The announcement was made today in a joint press

statement by the Commonwealth Minister for Health, Mr Ralph

Hunt and the Western Australian Minister for Health and

Community Welfare, Mr Young. '

The new refuges are at Kalgoorlie and Perth.

The Goldfields Women's Refuge, to be run by a

community group, will provide emergency accommodation and

counselling services for women and children in crisis situations

in Kalgoorlie. Currently, there are no such facilities in

Kalgoorlie. The nearest women's refuge is at Northam..

The Jesus People Women's Refuge in Perth, caters

primarily for young single women in. need o f .emergency

accommodation and counselling. The refuge can cater for up

to 25 people. . . .

This will bring to 11 the number of women's refuges

jointly funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments in

Western Australia. .
