PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR HEALTH, MR RALPH HUNT

COMMENT ON 2 A . 5 - T STUDY

The Minister for Health, Mr Ralph Hunt, tonight

expressed his confidence in the decision of the National Health

and Medical Research Council on 2,4,5-T.

He was commenting on the Council1s statement

that there was still no scientific evidence for additional re­

strictions on the use of the herbicide in Australia, .

Mr Hunt said the assessment of the NH& MRC

Working Party would now be conveyed to all State health author­

ities.

It was a matter for State Governments to de­

termine whether any further action was necessary in the light of

the NH& MRC assessment, ,

Mr Hunt said: Ί am confident of the thor­

oughness of the investigations carried out by the NH& MRC Working

Party,

'This body Includes some of Australia’s fore­

most authorities on matters relating to toxic substances and con­

genital deformities, .

'After careful consideration of all the evi­

dence available, the Council advises that the evidence of the

United States report does not provide a basis for changes to the

present situation regarding the use of 2,4,5-!·

. Ί can assure all Australians that the Council

will continue to monitor all future evidence from throughout the

world on this subject, .

fullest possible perinatal statistical collection, moves are

already.in hand to extend the collection of data to include all
