JOINT PRESS STATEMENT BY THE COMMONWEALTH MINISTER FOR HEALTH, MR, RALPH HUNT, AND THE TASMANIAN MINISTER FOR COMMUNITY WELFARE AND CHILD CARE, MR MICHAEL POLLEY

MORE MONEY FOR LAUNCESTON WOMEN* S SHELTER

More money has been made available under the Community

Health Program for the Launceston Women's Shelter,

This was announced today in a joint statement by the

Commonwealth Minister for Health, Mr Ralph Hunt, and the

Tasmanian Minister for Community Welfare and Child Care, Mr

Michael Polley.

The Commonwealth Government will provide $14 000 for

the expansion of the Shelter. This will bring the 1978-79

Community Health Program block grant to Tasmania for women's

refuges to $182 000.

The Tasmanian Government will match the Commonwealth

grant on the accepted 75 per cent to 25 per cent basis, bringing

the State's contribution to women's refuges in Tasmania to

$67 600.

The additional grant to the Launceston Women's Shelter

will enable it to expand its activities to cater more effectively

for young women.

It is proposed that an annexe to the existing shelter be

established for an initial trial period of six months, after

which it is proposed to evaluate its operation.
