JOINT PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR HEALTH, MR RALPH HUNT, AND THE MAJORITY’LEADER IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY, MR PAUL EVERINGHAM

RESPONSIBILITY FOR HEALTH MATTERS IN N.T.

' The Commonwealth Government has decided not^to go ahead

with the establishment of a Health Commission in the Northern

Territory. ·

This was announced today in a joint statement by the

Minister for Health, Mr Ralph Hunt, and the Majority Leader in

the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, Mr Paul Everingham.

. They said.the original decision to establish a Health

Commission had been overtaken by the Commonwealth’s approval

for the transfer of responsibility for all State-type functions

to the Assembly by 1 July 1979.

The Government accepted the Majority Party's

submission that a Commonwealth Health Commission for the

Northern Territory should not proceed.

Detailed planning for the transfer of control was now

under w a y . ·
