COMMISSIONER TO THE SOLOMON ISLANDS

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, today announced the appointment of Mr A.J. Melhuish as Australia's Commissioner to the Solomon Islands» .

He will succeed Mr Philip Jackson, Australia's representative in Honiara since 1975= Mr Melhuish, 52, currently the Department's Senior Foreign Affairs.Representative in Melbourne, has previously served as Deputy High Commissioner in New Zealand and in India, He has also served in Washington, Seoul and Colombo=

Mr Melhuish, a graduate of the University of Sydney, is married with three children.

Mr Peacock said that the importance the Government attached to relations with the Solomon Islands was reflected in today?'; έ: announcement that the Chief Minister, Mr Peter Kenilorea, would visit Australia as a guest of the government from 19 to 30 October,
