HIGH COMMISSIONER TO FIJI AND TONGA

Australia's new High Commissioner to Fiji arid Tonga will be Mr Gordon Upton, a senior career officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Mr Upton, 55, is at present Minister (Deputy Head of Mission) in the Australian Embassy in Washington. i

Announcing the appointment today, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, said that Mr Upton would take up his appointment in July. He would succeed Mr H.W. Bullock, who will become Australia's

new Ambassador to Argentina.

Mr Peacock said: "Australia attaches great importance to its relations with the South Pacific region.

"Fiji has been a leader in the establishment of valuable regional organisations, such as the South Pacific Forum, and Tonga is an influential force among the Polynesian nations within the Forum".

Mr Upton, who joined the Department of Foreign ' Affairs in 1945 after serving with the RAAF, has served previously in San Francisco, Washington, Bangkok and Jakarta. In 1970 he was appointed High Commissioner to

Sri Lanka and subsequently Minister in the Australian High Commission in London before moving to the same position in Washington.

Mr Upton is married with three children. He is a graduate of the University of Sydney.
