AUSTRALIAN DELEGATION TO ECOSOC MEETING

Mr Laurence Corkery, Australia°s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, is leading Australian delegation to the 57th Session of the Economic and Social· Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations,

which has begun meeting in Geneva.

The Australian delegation also includes senior officials of the Departments of Overseas Trade and Foreign Affairs.

The meeting will continue until 2 August to consider an agenda which includes a study of the world economic situation; discussion of measures which should be taken to limit the effects of recent developments such as the rise in oil prices on the economies of developing and

other countries; preparations,for the World Food Conference; international consideration of commodity and raw material problems; and a study of the role of multi-national corporations in the international community.

ECOSOC is a charter organ of the United Nations and is responsible for policy formulation and coordination in the economic and social fields throughout the United Nations system. Australia was elected by the General Assembly to ECOSOC for a period of three years commencing on

1 January 1974. It was last on the Council in 1962=64o
