APPOINTMENT OF AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR TO THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC

The Foreign Minister, Senator Don Willesee announced today that Mr J.A. Forsythe, Australia’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, had been appointed as Australia’s first Ambassador to the Malagasy Republic.

Mr Forsythe is based in Bar es Salaam, from where he is also accredited as High Commissioner to Mauritius and Zambia, and will make regular visits to the Malagasy Republic.

Senator Willesee said that he welcomed this accreditation to an important country in the Indian Ocean, both as a mark of the importance Australia attached to its relations with the Malagasy Republic and as an indication of Australia's widening interests in Africa. In an important

sense, he said, the Malagasy Republic represented, in common with other western littoral states of the Indian Ocean, a link between our own region and the continent of Africa.

Senator Willesee said he looked forward to a rapid · ' ' expansion of relations between the countries, bilaterally,' in the United Nations and through the contacts which Australia now had with the Organisation for African. Unity. ■
