HIGH COMMISSIONER TO KENYA AND AMBASSADOR TO ETHIOPIA

The Foreign Minister, Senator Don Willesee, today announced

the appointment of Mr Walter P.J. Handmer as Australia's

High Commissioner to Kenya and Australian Ambassador to Ethiopia.

In addition to his duties in Kenya, and Ethiopia, Mr Handmer will

have visiting and reporting responsibilities in a number of other

East African countries and territories including the Somali '

Republic, Burundi Rwanda, the Territory of Afars and Isas and

the Seychelles„

Mr Handmer, a senior career officer of the Department of Foreign

Affairs, will succeed Mr K.H. Rogers who has returned to Canberra to

head the Department's Defence Division. ,

Senator Willesee said the Government was keen to develop

further Australia's already cordial friendship with the Governments

and peoples of the countries to which Mr Handmer will be accredited.

Senator Willesee, who last year visited several African capitals

including Nairobi and Addis Ababa, recalled the Government's policies

on African issues and noted that the increased sympathy and under­

standing for the aspirations of African peoples reflected in these

policies had been welcomed in Africa. ■

Mr Handmer was Ambassador to Burma from 1970 to 1973 when he

returned to Canberra to Head the Department's North Asia Branch.

His earlier overseas appointments were in Hong Kong, Singapore,

Bangkok, Taipei and Washington.

Mr Handmer was born in Bunbury, Western Australia. He was

educated at Bunbury High School and the University of Western

Australia. He served with the RAAF during World War II and joined

the Department of. External Affairs in 1951·

Mr Handmer is married and has 3 sons and 2 daughters
