DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE SUDAN

' The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Willesee,

announced today that Australia and the Democratic Republic

of the Sudan had agreed to the establishment of diplomatic

relations at Ambassadorial level. · ,

Senator Willesee said that the Australian Government

we 1 c'omed this important development in Australia's overseas

representation. The establishment of diplomatic relations with

the Sudan would help to develop and strengthen the friendship

and cooperation already existing between the two. countries.

The Minister added that the strengthening of Australia's links

with the Sudan, an important member of the African community

of nations, also reflected the increased importance attached _

by Australia to relations with Africa. I

. Senator Willesee recalled his recent meetings with the

Sudanese Foreign Minister, Dr Khalid, particularly during

Dr Khalid's visit to Australia last November, and said he looked

forward to a friendly and fruitful association with the Sudan in

many areas. .
