OVERSEAS STUDENT WELFARE CONFERENCE.

A two day conference on the welfare of overseas students

in Australia will be held at the International Training Centre, John

McEwen House, in Canberra on 26 and 27 August.

The conference is convened at about this time each year

by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Affairs and the other Commonwealth departments

handling Australia's programme for the training in Australia of

students from developing countries discuss with representatives of

voluntary organisations and overseas student bodies suggestions for

improving welfare arrangements for the students.

Some 50 delegates and 15 observers representing welfare

co-ordinating committees in each State, the Australian Union of

Students and its Overseas Student Service, various voluntary organ­

isations, and the Commonwealth departments, will formulate guidelines

for welfare activities in the coming year.

Dr. Daphne M. Keats, author of 1 Back in Asia', a survey

of the utilisation of Australian training in several Asian countries,

will address the conference on 26 August at 3-45 p.m. on welfare

arrangements in regional centres- in Australia.

Mr. R.L. Hatchett will speak on the special welfare needs

of sub-tertiary overseas students on 27 August. Mr. Hatchett, a staff

member of the Sydney Technical College* has had long and first hand

experience of his suject.

The conference will be open to the press.
