ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT GRANTS

FOR VOLUNTARY CONSERVATION BODIES

Details of grants totalling $350,000 to 26 voluntary conservation organisations throughout Australia were announced today by the Minister for Environment, Housing and Community Development, Mr Ray Groom. .

The grants will help organisations meet administration expenses. ' ·

Mr Groom said that grants had been made on the condition of $2 for every $1 raised by the environment organisations.

Community support for the groups had been demonstrated by the way in which they had been able to meet this condition.

The Government had however, decided that from next year (1979/80) the matching grant would be made on a $1 for $1 basis. · . .

"I am announcing this today, so that the environment bodies can have as much time as possible to develop . alternative sources of finance", Mr Groom.said.

"The protection of the National Estate is not the respons ibility of government alone or of one group of people. It is something in which the whole community should be involved.

"Voluntary organisations like National Parks Associations, Conservation Councils and Environment Centres are a fine example of community involvement and concern for the protection of the National Estate". .

Mr Groom said that the grants to conservation bodies had been approved following advice from the Australian Heritage Commission. . ' ' ‘ . .

A list of the approved grants is attached.
