The Commonwealth Government is to provide $330 million to the States this financial year for welfare housing.

The Minister for Environment, Housing and Community Development, Mr Ray Groom, said today the Commonwealth would provide a base allocation to the States of $200 million and: an additional $130 million which would be matched on a $ .for $ basis.

These arrangements, taken together with the recycling of rental income and sale proceeds, would make possible total . expenditure on welfare housing in 1978-79 at least equivalent .to that in 1977-78. ,

The Government had increased the amount of its allocation for rental housing for needy pensioners from $10 million in · 1977-78 to $l4 million next financial year. ·

"The Commonwealth's decision, announced at the Premiers' Conference, reflects the Government's determination to continue its broad economic policy which has already brought a reduction. . in the rate of inflation and restoration of consumer and business

confidence," Mr Groom said. '

"To build on these gains it is necessary to continue the firmest possible public expenditure restraint.

For this reason the States have this year been asked to take a greater share in providing assistance for welfare housing."

This year's allocation brought the total of Commonwealth assistance made available to the States under successive Commonwealth/State Housing Agreements to $4,385 million.
