FIGURES FOR CIVILIAN -EMPLOYMENT ' .

The Minister for Employment and Youth Affairs, Mr Ian Viner, , today commented on the figures for civilian employment released by the Australian Statistician. .

"The number of civilian employees in February 1979 is estimated - to be 4,753,100 persons. This is an increase of 31,700 persons over- the January 1979 figure. In seasonally adjusted terms this was an increase of 1900 (800 males and 1100 females) Mr Viner indicated.

Mr Viner said: VCivilian employment in seasonally adjusted terms has risen again in February for the eighth· consecutive month. Since June 1978 the total rise, in seasonally adjusted terms, has been 48,100.

"Even more pleasing is the fact :.that most of this seasonally adjusted increase has been -in' private employment·which rose again making the sixth consecutive monthly increase. Since August 1978 private employment has risen by 35,400. Furthermore

it is the fifth successive month in which a rise has been recorded in manufacturing employment. Since September 1978 there has been an increase of 12,700 persons employed in manufacturing industries", Mr Viner said.

"These latest movements in.employed wage and salary earners are yet another indication of'the steady improvement in the level of economy which has become increasingly evident in recent months", the Minister concluded.
