A RISE IN THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN EMPLOYMENT

The Minister for Employment and Youth Affairs, Mr Ian Viner,

today; commented on the figures for civilian employment

released by the Australian Statistician.

"The. number;.of civilian employees in January 1979 is estimated

to be 4,721,400 persons. Although this is a decrease of

21,000 persons over the December 1978 figure, it significantly

represents an increase of 3300 (900 males and 2400 females) in seasonally adjusted terms", Mr Viner indicated.

Mr Viner said: "Civilian employment in seasonally adjusted

terms has risen again in January for the seventh consecutive

month. Since June 1978 the total rise, in seasonally adjusted

terms, has been 46,200.

"Even more pleasing is the fact that most of this rise has been

in private employment which rose again making the fifth

consecutive monthly increase. Since August 1978 private

employment has risen by 29,500.

"In fact, private employment is now higher than it was this time

a year ago. The last time this happened was in October 1974."

Mr Viner said that the rise in employment occurred in all principal industries. "In considering the employment situation,

all the relevant indicators have to be taken into account. As

I said at the time of releasing the February CES figures, a

number of labour market indicators are now showing favourable

movements.. One of the more important of these is the series

on civilian employment just released for January'.', he said.
